TROPHIC TROPHIES
This is where it all began, making Harris Tweed trophy mounts, so the real thing was left in the wild. I did not succeed in quelling the Global ‘sport’ of trophy hunting but it wasn’t for the lack of trying.
I am now in the process of evolving this idea and creating key species that are combined with the flora and fauna of their eco system. To create pieces that highlight the need for preserving biodiversity by showing some of the species impacted in the same ecosystem. We had a tendency to concentrate on individual key species when discussing conservation, I hope to create a more visual celebration of the species that co-exsist.
I am developing techniques and materials suitable for each species whether a moss, insect, bird or mammal.
First in development is a Red Stag - a key species when discussing the wild spaces in Scotland. Inspired by rewilding projects in the Cairngorms, he is undergoing his immersion into the species of his ecosystem.
This is a large undertaking and craft is slow. Once I have my techniques developed for the wide range of species an expanded range will be produced.
A smattering of what came before as Studio Gnu. The collective Noun for Gnu (wildebeest ) is an implausibility. This seems apt.
